You stand a 1 in 1000 chance of being banned, and if you get banned for just botting "those first few levels", you are incredibly unlucky. Very few people are banned now, and I think those who are are generally the people who make stupid decisions (I knew a guy who got 72 accounts banned which he used to advertise his website, he did it by spamming the default channel when a player entered his screen, using an automatic hotkey pressing tool he made himself).

Your best bet is to get a copy of the bot and try learn to use the lua engine, then make a few scripts yourself. If you don't want to do rook, use a rook to main script (there is one somewhere here), and just make your own scripts for main.

I would also advise checking out http://cheaptibiagold.com/index.php?l=page_view&p=starteraccounts for starter accounts, generally speaking most accounts there are dirt cheap and good for skipping rook and boring low levels. If you want something a bit better, or perhaps some scripts / gps, also check out www.xenochars.com. Both are trusted sites, owned by Wobbz and HolmaN respectively, both trusted members of the community.

I dont think there are more ore less safe free scripts on the forums they are all equally safe.
The characters on the one site XtrmJosh linked sells nice mid or low level chars for 10-25 usd.
Cipsoft will only ban the account not anything else. They cant ban for example all accounts which logged on with the same ip, you could have 2 room mates which also play tibia so it is just not possible for cip to use your ip against you in any way.

Were there some other changes (like the Demon I just faced after the beginner quest)? :P

If isle of destiny didn't exist when you quit then yeah, they added tutorials for new users and they give you eq before you go to main.
They also extended Zao, Gray Island, Gnomegate and such.
You can still world transfer characters.

They revamped venore with winter update.
