View Full Version : Things to think about when trading

A list of things to consider before making a trade:
It's not safe to buy an account instantly only because the seller got a confkey.
Since the hacker could order one just the day after you activate yours and hack you since the key are sent via the rl mail system to the adress used on the account, which is his. Remember that it takes 30 days to change the information on the account, having a confkey or rk doesn't make it go any faster.
Make sure the buyer/seller send you a e-mail to your email adress saying "Everything went smooth, I recived this amount of cash/items or characrer, and I paid/gave away this."
By having a email like this, sent from the same email used on the buyer/paypal or w/e you use, it will be much harder for the hacker to scamm you. And you can always use the IP to provide proof when making a chargeback of hacked.
Search around useing the regular search forum which most of you guys seem to never have used before. It's simple, write the name in the search bar and press ENTER. WOOOHOO YOU MADE IT!
Browsing his name in the serch function will show all posts he made along with posts he's mentioned in, and by that you'll be able to see if he made any safe deals.
http://forums.xenobot.net/search.php
If a person brag about making safe deals etc, make sure you contact a previous tradesman of him. Just make sure to check if they're close mates or something before you do, because if they are, it's obvious that they'll protect and vouch for each other no mather what. Afterwards they'll just go "men me is no know man why u say me this ok?". (-Polander edition)
Remember that a confkey is valid for 6 months nowdays. The activation order doesn't matter when buying multiple keys. Which means, if you order 1, and 2 days later order another, and decides to activate the first one that arrived. The second one is still valid, and the other way around. Due to that, the account isn't safe from hacks untill 6 months after the purschase. You buy it (30 days), + another 6 months, as the seller could as well have ordered a new key to his adress on day 29.
Paypal isn't always your best friend, keep that in mind. It's a fast and simple way of buying goods and such from a friend. But be aware of the risks while using paypal. Paypal do NOT provide any seller protecting, nor any buying protection when dealing with virtual items such as tibia accounts and items. The most common scam in Tibia is to sell an account, go to the bank and say "Hey, someone has been using my visa/mastercard to buy something on paypal. I wany my money back". Paypal will open a case towards you and you'll lose your money + a fee of 20 euro for dealing with the case + another transfer fee to them since you're not under any seller protection. That's how it works, so take a look into other ways of trading before using paypal. Atleast don't use it as alternative 1 when you don't know the other partner.
And the most important part, don't be stupid. If something is too good to be true, it often is. Use your head, not your dick.
Kind Regards, HolmaN.

Make trades it's really complicated, because you don't know what will happen.
Even if the person got RK, you will have to pay him first until he pass it to you, and when you got you need to test it. If doesn't work, despair comes to you.
The only way to ease it is follow the third point: search about the guy and his trades.
Even like that, the point 4 can cheat you, because his 'trades' could be some friends trying to support him and make 'confiable'.
Good thread, HolmaN. This you open some eyes around here.

easy way is this, if its too good to be true... dont do it.
second - if it smells like a scam, dont do it.
& 3rd, always check bot sites for scammers lists (people that have been named and shamed for doing them).
often when i trade i only trade with people i know have done a few deals in the past :) just see the players past posts and contact some people they claim to have traded with and youll know get an idea if you want to deal with them or not :p

I would suggest writing a contract, sounds silly but get them to sign and date it, ask for a scan of his drivers license/front of drivers license. If anything goes pearshape. If the buyer/seller does a shifty, just straight to paypal and show em the evidence.

Add something about too low price or something :o.
Example: someone selling 1kk on rl tibia for €10 = 100% scam but peopple might fall for it because they think they found a nice deal
Any tips for trading an account in a secure way? Because I want to sell it, but I'm not giving the recovery key before the other pays me.
Any method to do so??

If someone is unwilling to pay first before you give them the key, they're likely planning on scamming you or stealing your stuff and possibly rooking your character. I suggest using a trustworthy middle-man.
Note: You should always order a confirmation key before, and proceed when you have it. The confirmation is an insurance policy if anything should go wrong. Showing the customer the character should obviously be done via Tibia Cast, never let them on the character before they pay. I've done hundreds of trades with Tibia stuff, you're likely to run into at least one scam - be careful.
Never, ever accept payments from, or trust an Unverified PayPal User. Even if an Unverified member sends you $1,000, your best option is to refund the money and "walk away" from the transaction. Disputes on your account may seem fishy to PayPal for future transactions, if the time comes where you want/need to win a dispute.

Seems so professional, I'm feeling like a noob.
What I don't understand is why do I have to refuse money from unverified members, anyways, I will try to do the "middle-man".
Thanks for your help ;)

Another thing to think about when trading: Do not feel obligated to purchase the first account or character you see which meets your criteria.
The prices on this forum (and others) are quite high in retrospect to account values found on Allegro, where most accounts sold on forums originate from in the first place. From there, you can acquire characters between level 200 to 300 in Optional PVP for less than $200 in most cases. An example of this price gouging: there is currently a level 400 EK on Candia selling for less than $500 USD. Contrary to popular belief, purchasing from Allegro is no more of a risk than through most members on any forum on the internet. Explore your options - there are many out there.

You're wrong dude, nowdays 80% of the accounts you buy on allegro will be taken back. I used to buy from there and like 3/4 accounts has been stolen after 3 weeks, that why I started to buy chars on my own terms, and paying when they're registrated on me.

Hello everybody. I am new here on this forum and I am thinking about buying a character to play on a non pvp world. Because I don't want to waste my pvp char.
There are just some things I am not sure about.
Maybe it is one more thing to think about when you are buying an account:
When you agreed with a guy on the forum to buy his account and you have already paid him, he will send you the account information and maybe the recovery or confirmation key.
You have to change the email and the password first and then you want to change the registration to your address and name. This takes 30 days if I am not wrong.
During this time (maybe one day before the account moves to your name and address) is it still possible for the old owner to order a new confirmation key? After 30 days (registration is on you) you feel save and put your items on the char. The ordered confirmation key will be send to the address that was on the registration while ordering it. So the old owner got 60 days (confirmation key is valid for 60 days) more time to get a new recovery key and to get his account back with all of your items.
Please improve me if I am wrong :-)

The newer confirmation key cancels the first one making it useless
The newer confirmation key cancels the first one making it useless
As far as I know that's incorrect. A confirmation key is valid for two months after purchasing, no matter if another one is being purchased afterwards. So Joey88 the account would be 'safe' after 30 days, the characters and the items on them are 'safe' after 90 days.

each confirmation key is valid 60 days,
even if ordered later conf has been activated,
This mean that account could be taken back in 30 days ( before registration change),
and hacked in 89 days(if old owner order new confirmation before new one accept changing registration info).
So best way is to instant change emeil adress after 3 months using rkey to see if its still working and you can be 100% sure about safely of your account then.

Updated.
Edit: Pirate, the old confkey doesn't get invalid if you activate the newer one, unless it's older than 60 days. A confkey is always valid for 60 days, no mather how many you order and in what order you activate them. The old recovery keys gets invalid on the other hand.
With regards, HolmaN.

HolmaN and J Dre, you guys were mods on tibiaug right? I remember you guys from when i used to buy/sell on those forums. Good to see you guys again :D
On topic: I have bought and sold chars many times in the past, but i have never traded one account for another. Im about to trade an account for another voc with some guy on these forums and im thinking about using a middle man for this trade (first time using middle man service). Could somebody explain how a middle man works in detail, would it actually secure a trade like the one im about to do? Also how much does a middleman usually charge for something like this?
Thanks in advance.

Hints/Tips to new or "paranoid" traders:
You have every right to be paranoid! People act in self-interest, simple as that. The reason I am writing this is because I've been victim to scams my for many years, and have come to learn a few tips and tricks to help weed out the scammers. However, nothing can guarantee you a safe trade unless it is done in very specific and tedious ways that most people are unwilling to comply with. But here's what I think will help you...
PayPal: Concerns & Red Flags
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person doesn't want to send payment as a gift:
This is not necessarily a definite warning sign of a scammer, but usually anyone concerned with sending as an Instant Payment will either do one of two things: 1). act out of fear (which you don't want because this may lead to regrets or doubts), or 2) refuse to trade with you because you requested them send it as a gift and this can mean a many number of things as well. Sometimes people see "gift" as a sign of scamming. So, your request for this may be falsely interpreted. Just keep an open dialog and never force their hand.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person is not a verified member:*
Warning! Get them verified. If they refuse, move on. Do not trade with unverified PayPal members, no matter what. To verify their account completely means they must confirm their bank account information and at least one credit card or debit card. PayPal requires real information from the person in order to verify their account. A verified member is less likely to be a scammer. Unverified members may hold brand new accounts, and this should definitely be of concern.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person is new or does not have a sales reputation:
Warning! This is quite obvious. Do not let them take advantage of your desperation. I've seen so many good people desperate to make a sale or purchase and end up manipulated by some new member whom turns out to be a scammer. Notice I mention a "sales" reputation because it's easy to buy something. It's not as easy to sell something and keep your end of a deal, especially when it comes to characters, that require 31 days of waiting.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person is avoiding you or replies slowly:
Warning! Do not fall for the, "I'm busy.", "Sorry, wasn't at home.", or plain ignoring of messages bullshit anyone may pull on you, particularly if they have no trade history or reputation on the forum. This doesn't mean they're scammers but a lot can be learned about a person when you consider their behavior. A person that wants to trade will make the time to trade, just like a girl you ask out will make the time to go out with you, even if she's currently busy. Of course, there's always the possibility someone may actually be busy. But if they are interested, they will set a time to talk.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person is simply acting suspicious or rushing things:
Warning! For the love of God, do not trade with anyone that is acting suspicious or rushing the trade, especially if they do not have a solid reputation. I've seen so many people be scammed by others because they were manipulated into thinking they had to go or they'd lose out on the deal. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER DEAL! DO NOT RUSH YOUR TRADES! Take the time to consider the situation and make the best decision.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person will not use a middle man of any kind:
Warning! This is another obvious one, especially if they do not have a trade history to uphold their claim of being trustworthy. I recently avoided a trade because I did not want to pay for a middle man. Does that make me a scammer? No, of course not. But I have a pristine trade history. If someone does not agree to a trustworthy middle man, do not trade with them. Also, NEVER allow them to choose the middle man alone. Choose one together. If they do not agree with those terms, simply end the conversation and move on. Leave them with the option of collaboratively deciding on a middle man and say your goodbyes. It's not worth the risk.
http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person will not use other payment methods:
Warning! If they won't use any other payment methods, and also do not have a trade history, you should probably avoid trading with them. This does not mean they are always scammers, but it does mean they are not willing to negotiate and work with you. All parties involved in a trade (of any kind) should mutually benefit from said trade. You will always find another person to trade with. It's definitely worth waiting for the right person.
So, in the end, is this a full-proof system? No, but following these tips will surely help you avoid at least 50% of the scammers out there, putting the odds in your favor. If you need help with a trade, or want further advice, feel free to send me a private message. I'm planning to start a commission free middle man service myself to help deter scamming. Keep an eye out for that thread.
*Unverified members have another option known as MoneyPak. It is a prepaid card they purchase at the store and use through PayPal. It cannot be charged-back as long as they enter a valid confirmation number and send the payment properly. It should instantly arrive in your account. This should be seen as a last resort, and you should not deliver until the payment goes through.

As far as I know the most effective way to chargeback money on PayPal if it is sent as payment for family/friends (gift) is to chargeback the initial payment from creditcard/bank account. If the paypal user is unverified wouldn't that actually make it less riskfull since he/she wouldn't be able to pull the creditcard/bank account chargeback?
P.s. This doesn't apply to payments sent as goods/services ofcourse.

I'm on a cell, so I'll try to respond adequately:
Generally, no. That doesn't make it "better" or less risky. Unauthorized usage claims on unverified accounts are just as likely to win or lose, if not more likely, because there is nothing attached to the account except some random card. I'm not suggesting anyone use gifts, but merely ask if they're willing to use it. You should avoid unverified users at all costs. My main point was implying that a verified PayPal user is less likely to be a scammer. If he/she is already verified, there's a good chance he/she has done previous trades online with someone somewhere. Getting verified isn't worth the trouble to most looking to scam because their personal information is stored and cannot be reused. Consider this a clever way to find out more about the person you're trading with. ;)
Also, I've learned of recent policy changes to gifts: PayPal informed me that money uploaded to your PayPal account (PayPal balance) from a verified bank account, sent as a gift, cannot be disputed. Do I believe this? Not necessarily. But it does seem to have some merit behind it. I have not tested this theory myself. The PayPal policy is different outside of the U.S., so I can't comment specifically on experiences elsewhere. I'm just going by what I know and have learned.
Hope that answers your question.

http://i60.tinypic.com/mhsfhw.png The person will not use a middle man of any kind:
I'm planning to start a commission-free middle man service myself to help deter scamming.

Hey - this is really good information since I will probably be spending over 1k for a few characters for my friends to play with me. After reading the OP, can you confirm what i'm interpreting below?
1) buy account, update information with your real address
2) wait 30 days for information to update
3) request new recovery key (this may take a couple of weeks)?
4) at this point, any previously ordered recovery keys are still valid for 6months, so we are not safe until 6 months then the account is ours permanently?
so if initial exchange of funds and account information goes smoothly, how can ppl leave a positive feedback/confirmation of success before 6 months? appreciate your help! will save me money and/or give me the confidence i need to how i approach my buying

You should ask the owner to purchase a confirmation key for you. This will give you a brand new recovery key.
You cannot order more than 1 key at a time, so he must wait for the first to arrive before ordering another. After it's registered in your name, you should order another one, just in case. I sometimes order two, just to be extra safe, depending on the account. Once it's registered in your name and you have a brand new recovery key, it should be safe.

Hey - thanks for the info. A few Q's, naturally
1) is a confirmation key the same thing as a recovery key? if not, how do they differ?
2) how much does this cost, as i imagine i will be the one adding to the cost of the trade
3) wouldn't him buying a recovery key BEFORE the address is updated go straight to his current address? If so, this seems to defeat the purpose
Would be helpful to get further clarification here

You enter it on the website and it gives you a new recovery key. It costs 5 EUR. And no, it wouldn't defeat the purpose.
You should really Google this stuff and read about it.

Nice thread but this point is not true.
-Usually buying conf keys from my local reseller, once cuz of mistake he ordered 2 conf keys to single account, received both and both was valid.
So its possible that false seller order 2 conf keys, give 1 of them to buyer, new owner change registration, ordering new own confirmation key, create new recovery key from it, and still getting hacked like 4 months later.
Fact is account stay on his data so he could order just new conf key but he might lost items/get banned or rooked character before getting new key.
So the only safe way is to buy accounts that:
-have no recovery key ordered in payment history for last 6 months,
-seller could provide letter / screenshot/scan with used confirmation key to check if it was really used (since working just once),
-buy from trusted seller that check point 1 & 2 since most ppl don't even know they could check payment history and think that once registration is change account stay safe

Yeah you can use pay pal securely if your knowledgeable about Taking down information screen shotting the trade agreements with proof that its the person, Pay pay will acknowledge both sides. I had a friend who had this issue. So its important to screenshot every agreement trade with this person dates of transaction.. excc.

Add something about too low price or something :o.
Example: someone selling 1kk on rl tibia for €10 = 100% scam but peopple might fall for it because they think they found a nice deal
Wow, Tibia sure have changed...

I've sadly heard tons of mixed things about the rec key codes and stuff but I was also told in the past few months Tibia also posted about how that's no longer possible to do, but I am not sure on that 100%.
Also it's just really hard anyways , always a risk regardless of who you decide to trade with. I've seen more people scammed by IRL friends in my 15 years in Tibia then re-sellers.

Paypal douse not allow digital good sales threw their service, so if you sent via Friend/Family and then you say the person scammed you for a Video game account you'll hear a huge lecture from them and even are in risk of banishment. This is just my EXP with Paypal over the past few years.

I got a question, If instead of using the first on, he use the second one, the first on is still valid?
