Seems linking them in these ways ruins the header image though. Weird.

This is due to poor website coding!
Absolute URLs were used to specify the image srcs, ex: http://www.tibiamaps.org/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/headers/yalahar-zombies.jpg
Relative URLs should have been used, ex: /wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/headers/yalahar-zombies.jpg
