It's been quite awhile since I played --- is it still very common to get PK'ed when completing this quest, and are there any good ways to avoid it (can you logout right after you get the reward??? etc.)

nope tibia blocked pk on the reward room, you cant do it anymore, theres also safe zones in the basins

I don't know, it was quite awhile ago... maybe 7 or 8 years.
