You don't really need a sponsor for a low level mage :p their level path is pretty straight forward,
Rookgaard(8) > Larvas(33) > Earth Elementals(50) > Water Elementals(130) > DLs(200+)

I don't see the point why not. I mean, there are some opportunities to show off some basic scrips.
Earth elementals, tombs, water elementals for instance. They are simple, yet they somehow show the scripters skill.

I did larvas from 8-13, 13-23~ darashia rotworms, 23-33 northern port hope, 33-60 earth elementals, 60-80 water elementals. The Water Elemental spawn is so crowded and filled with PK's on a daily basis so I wouldn't recommend to be there til 130 even if it's a good place to gain levels on. I would suggest that he go to peninsula tomb -3 -4 at level 80 because it's very rare that people come to this place.

Yeah, you can skip Water Elementals completely if you like and go for tombs -3 at 60, you wont waste as much, possibly even profit.

@Wovimus' Tarpit Tomb script is pretty awesome.
