My fiance got a motorola razr m and it goes into a "semi-permanent" sleep mode. On random occasions if it is charging or just randomly. She took a nap woke up and her phone would not turn on no lights no screen however I could call it... it would not ring or anything but the call was going through as if it were on. After a short investigation its a known problem with the phone that just has not been fixed yet(fixed it for her just an annoying bug with out an update yet). EDIT: new to smartphones myself :P just got it like 2 weeks ago... so not really sure of the capabilities of rooting yet. I just understand the reasoning behind it.
