    Decking out the new apartment

This past week I moved from Atlanta, GA to Cupertino, CA - something many of you angrily discovered when I was unable to update for a few days. After two days of packing, a four day drive, and a day of moving everything into my new apartment, the only task remaining was to unpack. I decided, however, that I would not only set everything back up, I would also set it up well and make it look good. This thread serves as a captioned pictorial memoir of that quest.

    The Bedroom
    Tasks:
    • Setup Main Desk (computer, controls, 3x screens)
    • Setup Secondary Desk (printer, router, modem, laptop)
    • Mount TV + Chromecast
    • Setup Bookshelf

    screens have been mounted

    both desks prepped

cabling nearly complete (I have a cabling fetish)

cabling done, desks aligned. stupid fucking outlet just haaad to be right in that exact spot. sdadfafgdas

tv mounted and leveled, empty bookshelf beneath

I hope you didn't really think I could let that wire just hang down

much better. I hope I get more wires to go to the tv so the huge channel doesn't feel like a waste

    done. pic numero uno

    numero dos

    numero tres

    BONUS!!!
The outlet behind my bed is switched (connected to the light switch) for a lamp. Typically, a switched outlet has live power on the top plug and switched power on the bottom plug. This one, however, has both plugs on the switch. I like using switches, and I like having a phone charger and alarm clock by my bed. This must be fixed.

so i cracked open the outlet box to see if there was an unswitched wire so I could do it myself but there wasnt so I just ran an extension cord across the room like this

    The Livingroom
    Tasks:
    • Mount TV
    • Mount Low-Profile Shelf For XBox 360 + Cable Box
    • Find a Couch

    Preliminary Step A
I will have a pair of turtle beach headphones for the xbox which will be on a seperate table. Because of this, and the fact that the shelf for the xbox wont have much room for wiring, I must fabricate a custom audio adapter for the xbox before starting the livingroom.

I started with this off-brand many-system adapter that I had laying around

to cut down on bulk, I removed the extra connectors and cut their terminals down to the solders

    nice and compact

next step was to remove the s-video and video plugs and mark the audio pins on the board

with the audio pins known, I could solder a stereo RCA cable to the board

I then removed the bulky hub and wrapped the solders in electrical tape

    Preliminary Step B
The low-profile shelf I will be using for the xbox is a slab of glass. It is very sleek and will not have room the huge power brick that comes with the xb360. Because of this, I must extend the xbox's power supply. Don't do this shit at home unless you want to risk the death of you or your xbox (or unless you're a badass who's been doing this shit since you were like 6)*.
    *das me

how can I make this baby like 10 feet long...

    snip. I'll just stick a 10 foot wire in-between!

after testing with a multi-meter on the live brick (DON'T DO IT DUDE!), I've found out the following: yellow wires are 12v+ (same circuit, can be bundled), black wires are negative (can be bundled), the braid is ground, the red wire is 5v+, and the blue wire is a power sensor (coupling it with a ground wire turns the brick on). With this, I know I can make an extension with 5 wires.

More to come tomorrow. To begin making an extension, I need to buy wiring and shrink wrap of the appropriate gauges. Electronic store is closed atm.
