Everything is finished on my first build. Only when I click the power button all the fans and lights turn on for a moment and then it stops. Can't get a full boot on the computer. I don't know what I did wrong

Sounds like your BIOS may need an update.

Edit: You may also have the wrong type of motherboard (incompatible).

It ended up being that the power supply was faulty and when I tried a new power supply the motherboard itself wasn't producing any bios or picture so I had to replace them. This time I went with a higher end power supply and a great motherboard that has OC genie 4 and can run SLI on my graphics card if I want to add in a second one later so next week I will let you know how it turned out.

    Thumbs up

    @Al Bundy,

You want to spend around $1700 USD? If you're in Europe, the prices I find are going to be lower than your prices. So, I can probably build a better system for the same amount. With that in mind, I'll put together something for around $1500, and that should leave you some room for inflation/taxes.

    • Computer Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 450D [+$110] (Amazon)
    • CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (8MB Cache, up to 4.40 GHz) [+$335] (Amazon)
    • CPU Liquid Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80i GT Performance [+$100] (Amazon)
    • GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 [+$330] (Amazon)
    • Motherboard: ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Z97-PRO [+$210] (Amazon)
    • PSU: Corsair RM Series 650 Watt ATX/EPS 80PLUS Gold-Certified [+$99] (Amazon)
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB 2x8GB DDR3 2400MHz [+$155] (Amazon)
    • Optical Drive: LG Internal UH12NS30 BD-ROM Blu-ray Optical Drive [+$45] (Amazon)
    • Hard Drive (Storage): Western Digital 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM [+$70] (Amazon)
    • Optional SSD (Primary): Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5" SATA III [+$110] (Amazon)

    Sub-total: $1564 (with SSD).
    Taxes: Unknown

Notes: I would recommend you start with these specifications and go from there. The motherboard I chose has great reviews, and it also has built in A/C WiFi, which will come in handy. The water cooler is a bit more expensive but it is a premium cooler (a new version).

    Any suggestions on laptops?

    Budget: $1200 (+-200)
Preferably 13.3" or 14" but 15.6" is alright too

    Thanks!

Laptops are a bit tricky. It depends mainly on what you plan to use it for.

For gaming, I definitely recommend getting a dedicated GPU and a quad-core CPU, as it will last much longer and perform better. A GTX 960M is the lowest I would ever recommend, and even that I am hesitant to recommend because games are now using more than 2GB's of VRAM, and some require more than 2GB's.

I've gathered a few options for you:

Notes: The Alienware 13 is also an option, but it has a dual-core CPU and isn't all that great as a "long-term" investment. Unless you plan to upgrade every year, you should avoid the Alienware 13 laptop. It will also depreciate very quickly because of this. Keep in mind that the 960M is roughly 50% less powerful than the 970M, and approximately 20% less powerful than the 965M. You may have to sacrifice portability for performance, if that's what you want. The price for performance ratio is much better in the 15" notebook range.

Thanks for the links, currently on phone so I'll check them out in a bit.

With the same budget, would you reccomend building a desktop instead?

You'll get more bang for your buck with a desktop, but that's up to you. If you need a laptop, buy one.
