I couldn't get over 50 demons/hr staying there, so 400 demons would be over 8 hours for me

Yeah, 100 demons/hour seems high as hell. Are you hunting them with SDs?
As mage you should hunt with sds for sure. Gets you higher demon/hr and still making mad profit so no point using spells imo.
When I did demon task on my MS I used icicles and avalanche runes
Fastest way imo is edron behemoths with avalanches, going really fast
