I think the ban is justified.
'Playing' with him or not, your intentions were malicious. You 'planned' to "get revenge" (in your own words) and would have capitalized on the opportunity if it had presented himself. Maybe the next guy was/is a scammer, but so are you and you got caught first. Hope the ban stays. You deserved it.
