    Thumbs up

    @Sam,

    Maximum Performance Configuration:

    • CPU: AMD FX-8350 8-Core Black Edition [+$179] (Amazon)
    • GPU: Wait for Maxwell [+$150~]
    • Motherboard: ASUS Z97-A ATX w/ Intel GbLAN, 3 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1, 2 PCI, 1 x M.2, 1x SATA Express, 4x SATA 6Gb/s [+$140] (Amazon)
    • PSU: Corsair CX 500W ATX/EPS (80 PLUS) [+$50] (Amazon)
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2400MHz [+$95] (Amazon)
    • Storage (Primary): 128GB Samsung 850 PRO [+$110] (Amazon)
    • Storage (Secondary): Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache [+$75] (Amazon)

    Sub-total: $799
    Taxes: $55.93
    Total: $854.93

    Budget Configuration:

    • Removed - Samsung 850 PRO SSD [-$110]

    Sub-total: $689
    Taxes: $48.23
    Total: $737.23

To save some money, just remove the SSD. It's not necessary. You may think the memory is also unnecessary, but it's only $10 more than 1600MHz memory. So, why not? The GPU price is an estimation. This may go up or down a little bit, but the rest is spot on. That is the best configuration I could come up with right now. Maxwell consumes (on average) 30% less energy. So, a 500W PSU should be plenty.

    Hopefully this helps you decide.

Thanks @J.Dre, really appreciate your help.

I'm probably looking to buy before Maxwell is released - under those circumstances do you think the GTX 750Ti is a good option?

If you absolutely cannot wait until next month, then yeah, I guess the GTX 750Ti is an acceptable card for your budget. However, the GTX 760 is the card I recommend you take a look at. The 760 performs about 30% better and is only $70~ more than the 750Ti.

Okay sweet, I'll check out some reviews and look into it.

Now let's say I don't want to spend the full $800 - would you go with the FX 8350 and a basic HDD (could always upgrade to an SSD later, right?) or the FX 6300 with the HDD and an SSD? I mean from what I can tell all the SSD is going to do is make the original OS start-up faster.

Go with the better processor. You don't need the SSD. The SSD is basically a luxury item at this point. The AMD FX-8350 will last you much longer.

    AMD FX-8350 benchmark: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?...350+Eight-Core
    AMD FX-6300 benchmark: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?...-6300+Six-Core

Sounds good. I can always add in an SSD at a later point. When purchasing a case, does it really matter which one I get? Any specific features that it should have?

Yeah, you can always add an SSD later. Don't sacrifice the other main components for that.

Depends on the size of case you want. They range from $99 to $149. I recommend the Corsair 750D. The 450D / 650D / 750D should all be fine for this build.

I added the benchmarks of the two processors in the post above. Check it out.

This is the very good advice. I have chosen 750D and was really surprised of its powerful performance.
