Generally, with personal investments, you really should not be investing in individual corporations like Apple unless you have very high confidence or you feel like making minimal gains, IMHO.
Mutual funds have much higher annual returns, and even the riskiest ones are less risky then even the most reputable corporations. If you want to invest in things like Apple and Google, the best way is through a tech-centric mutual fund that happens to invest in both companies, along with hundreds of others. Honestly, though, I find biotechnology and general utility funds to have the best returns. I'm gaining around 20% annually with this strategy.
