For your pockets own sake, if you are able to get enough protein daily from food, proteinshakes will just be a waste. Keep atleast 1.5-2 Gram protein per kilo bodyweigh.
But if you can't keep up with your protein from only food, shakes is a good and easy way to reach the daily protein your body need to recover and build.
For pre-work out, I can't say anything, Iv'e done with Coffe and good music since I started out, have worked nicely for me =)
