Normally when you connect to a server, your computer connects to a server, which connects to another server, and so on until eventually you reach the server you are aiming for.

Using a proxy designed for gaming (especially those which target particular games) increases the efficiency by using privately leased servers with direct connections between each other. If you do a traceroute on a connection between your PC and a website, you will see a fucked up path (in fact, when I connect to my work computer, I go from UK -> Canada -> Western France -> East coast USA -> Cambridge (30 miles physical distance, some 5000 miles copper distance). Using a proxy, as you can imagine, that would be a much shorter distance.
Haha only 'cos I'm from Liverpool you gave me this info?! Not out the kindness of you heart? :P Cheers mate, I understand these shinnanigans now, always thought proxies were just used to get round blocked websites haha (*Cough*Pirate Bay*Cough*)
