What do the proxys actually do? Confused as to why you just wouldn't use the client on your PC?

As you're a scouser, I will give you the benefit of my knowledge!

Normally when you connect to a server, your computer connects to a server, which connects to another server, and so on until eventually you reach the server you are aiming for.

Using a proxy designed for gaming (especially those which target particular games) increases the efficiency by using privately leased servers with direct connections between each other. If you do a traceroute on a connection between your PC and a website, you will see a fucked up path (in fact, when I connect to my work computer, I go from UK -> Canada -> Western France -> East coast USA -> Cambridge (30 miles physical distance, some 5000 miles copper distance). Using a proxy, as you can imagine, that would be a much shorter distance.

I despise the amount of freedom that the government is taking from us with things like that, but they'll never succeed regardless, there is too much happening already. It's like controlling a forest fire, they simply can't control it, all they can do is restrict it to the current fuel source. Don't suppose you happen to know Floppy Joe? He's from Manchester, so figured maybe he introduced you to the bot or whatever, just curious :P

Yeah I know, tis stupid but there is no way they'll ever be able to control the internet lol. Too many people across the whole of the internet have more knowledge than the people in government. Nah can't say I know him, been a member here for a while just always lurked and never posted, but my day of reckoning has come and I'm posting more haha!

I've used Leatrex Latency fix to be able to bot properly on a NA server, perhaps it might work vice-versa aswell.

Im using WTFast. Works great. I used to lag while running and its all gone now.
